Can u take pictures of pages from books at barnes n noble or borders bookstore?

Lets say I was looking at a veggitarian cookbook and i took a picture of a few recipes on my phone to see if there any good. is this somehow illegal even though i might possibly buy the book? or are there store rules that prohibit me from doing this?
