Substitute for shortening?

I recently looked in an old cookbook of my mom's, and I found a nice looking chocolate chip cookie recipe that I wanted to try. Unfortunately, the recipe requires shortening, which I do not have. I've seen substitutes like butters, applesauce, and even mashed banana. What is the closest substitute there is to the actual thing?
